Police Hunt for Gunman Who Ambushed 3 Texas Deputies

A manhunt is on for a suspect who is accused of using an AR-15 rifle to shoot three Harris County deputy constables outside a Houston nightclub.

Authorities are searching for the gunman who ambushed three deputy constables outside a Houston nightclub over the weekend.

The Harris County Precinct 4 deputy constables were working an extra security shift at the business Saturday when the shooting happened. They had gone outside to investigate a disturbance that might have been a possible robber when a man with an AR-15 rifle opened fire from behind them.

Deputy Kareem Atkins, 30, died from his injuries, ABC News reports. He had been with the department since January 2019, and he had just returned from paternity leave.

Deputy Darrell Garrett, 28, needed surgery after he was shot in the back and is in intensive care. Deputy Juqaim Barthen, 26, was wounded in the foot.

The gunman is described as a heavy-set, bearded Hispanic man in his early 20s. He was wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans.

"We hope a suspect is in custody soon and I hope for swift and quick justice for that individual because he ambushed my deputies," said Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman. "This is very tragic. I do believe that good always trumps evil and what happened ... was evil."
